Was Osama Bin Laden on ‘Herbal Viagra’?

Esta es la parte 5 de un total de 5 partes en la serie Ask Doctor B.

According to New York Daily News (a highly incendiary newspaper that does not quote its sources), Osama Bin Laden’s medicine cabinet contained “Avena Syrup, an extract of wild oats that is marketed as a natural Viagra”.

While there is a small California company that markets this product as a natural aphrodisiac, no credible research has been published  to demonstrate this particular effect.  Avena (wild oat) is a very popular herb but I am doubtful that it will act as an aphrodisiac, except when impotence is the result of high stress levels, since Avena is a nervous system restorative.

If Osama intended to use it as an herbal Viagra, he would have had much better results utilizing a combination of Tribulus,  Maca,  Yohimbe, Damiana and/or Ginseng, all well known herbs that have demonstrated effects on sexual performance. The amino acid Arginine is also helpful.

For my patients I have recommended products such as “Hot Plants” for Her, or for Him,  or “Herbal V” with good results, but it is important to understand that the plants need to be used within the context of general health improvement.  A patient suffering from Diabetes or Atherosclerosis or High Blood Pressure will have to address those issues and overall improve blood vessel health before being able to benefit fully from aphrodisiacs.

So, as you fill your cabinet with good old aphrodisiac herbs, make sure you also exercise and eat your veggies…
